The Belogradchik rocks – the magnificent wonder of the nature
The rock phenomena Belogradchick rocks is situated in the West Forebalkans, near the town of Belogradchik. It forms a strip with length 30 km and width up to 3 km. The Belogradchik rocks are composition of rock figures resembling whole groups of people, animals petrified in dynamic positions, birds or different objects with different sizes. This is a rocky world with a motion and expression of its own, which gives to the visitors the possibility to find the way by their own. A closer scrutiny will reveal the entire history of the mankind.
Centuries ago among the Belogradchik roks were two monasteries – a nunnery and a friary. Sister Valentina could not hide her beauty under the cassock, and the rumors about it spread beyond the walls of the nunnery. Anton – a young shepherd – came to pour out his love with a shepherd pipe as whisper and airy kiss. Valentina’s heart beat madly with both happiness and pain. After some time, child’s cry sounded the nunnery. The harlot was anathematized and banished. Anton got on his horse to take in his beloved one. The monks went to protect her. And… A miracle happened! The Lord – witness of the pure love - sent rainstorm, thunder and earthquake. The convent collapsed. Valentina turned into a rocky Madonna with a child in her arms. The monks turned into rocks and Anton stayed to wait for his beloved one for ever.
All rocky figures still exist – ‘The Madonna’, ‘The Horseman’, ‘The Monks’, ‘The convent’. The gestures and the pose of ‘The Madonna’ exude moving for every mother feelings. ‘The Horseman’ is to be seen at the right, who will every minute break off the ground and will fly away. At the back, up on the rock, stands proudly ‘The Student’. Behind her stalks ‘The Bear’. Going uphill to the one of the highest rocky groups, one can find fascinating valleys surrounded by a wreath of black rocks. The route of the Belogradchik exposition leaves the bogatyr’s back of Diado Ivanov stone, passes by the legendary ‘Borich’ with the antique fortress and reaches the rocky figures ‘Zbegovete’. Below spreads the Magaza area where middle-age constructions can be seen. The millennia have shaped incredible sculptural artworks here. Going eastwards, the path passes through the picturesque Skoroshin glen, Dolni Krupets, Karlovitsa, and suddenly the stretched slender waist of the Belogradchink fortress rises, and above it are hewn into the rock the majestic figures of ‘Haidouk Velko’ – personification of the strength of the Bulgarians against the enslavers, ‘The Old Woman’ – petrified in an eternal sadness to her lamented children. One can also see the magic silhouettes of ‘The Dinosaur’, ‘The Doves’, ‘Pine Stone’, ‘Bee Stone’, the impressive Maiden rock – looking like a head of a girl - in whose foots murmurs the small Lom river.
All these rocky giants are divided into three groups: Falkovska group, Central group and Zbegovska group.
25 km away from the rocky masterpieces of the nature is located one of the largest Bulgarian caves – Magura (over 2,500 m) Only there one can see rocky images painted with bat’s guano (compost) 10,000 years BC. There are more than 100 caves in this area which are a challenge for the lovers of extreme sensations and adventures. Fallen into the arms of this wonderful world of rocky visions, each visitor will have the chance to keep unforgettable memories of touching the eternity and to feel the might of the nature.
